H1N1 Influenza Pandemics in Argentina

The first patient with H1N1 influenza A in Argentina was reported on May 8, 2009. Since then we have been collecting information from a great number of cases. We have also been following the WHO recommendations. Since then many cases have been reported and, according to recommendations, they have been divided into influenza-like cases and confirmed cases. During this pandemic the patients with mild symptoms did not have a virological confirmation which has been done in patients with risk factors and those who were admitted.

In September 2009 The Health Ministry announced the following the statistics:

  • Number of influenza-like cases: 1.054.000
  • Number of confirmed cases: 8240
  • Number of deaths: 512
  • The average time between the first symptom and hospitalization is 6 days.
  • The average time between hospitalization and death is 7 days.
The risk factors for development of severe disease are:
  • Pregnancy and delivery
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Immunodeficiency
  • Respiratory co morbidity (asthma and COPD)
  • Age: between 15 and 45
The treatment of patients with influenza-like syndrome, and confirmed cases and admitted cases has been carried out with oseltamivir at recommended dose.
